Friday Jumah Prayer

Hadrat Salman Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah has said,

“If a man takes bath on Friday; purifies himself as much as he can with ablution, applies oil from his oils, or uses any available perfume in his house, then goes out and, without squeezing between two men, prays what is prescribed for him, then remains silent when the Imam speaks (delivers sermon) his (minor) sins between that time and the next Friday will be forgiven.” [Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 1, Page 121, Book on the Friday Prayer]
Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah has said,

“When Friday comes, the angels stand at the door of the mosque recording the people in the order of their arrival. The parable of the first comer is like the parable of one who sends (to Makkah) a she-camel for sacrifice; the man who comes next is like the one who sends a cow for sacrifice, next a sheep, next like the one who sends a hen, next like the one who sends an egg. Then when the Imam stand up (on the Minbar/Pulpit) to deliver the sermon, they close their sheets and listen to the remembrance (sermon).” [Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 1, Page 127, Book on the Friday Prayer / Sahih Muslim, Vol. 1, Page 282, Book on the Friday Prayer]
Hadrat Samurah ibn Jundab Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah has said,

من ترك الجمعة من غير عذر فليتصدق بدينار فإن لم يجد فبنصف دينار
“Whosoever omits the Friday prayer without excuse he should give a Dinar in alms; or if he does not have (it), half a Dinar.” [Musnad Imam Ahmad, Vol. 5, Page 632 / Sunan Abi Dawud, Vol. 1, Page 151, Book on Prayer]
Hadrat Samurah ibn Jundub Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah has said,

احضروا الذكر وادنوا من الإمام فإن الرجل لا يزال يتباعد حتى يؤخر فى الجنة وإن دخلها
“Be present at the sermon (delivered on Fridays) and draw near the Imam; because whoever always keeps far away will likewise, be far away (towards the back) in Paradise, even though he will enter it.” [Sunan Abi Dawud, Vol. 1, Page 158, Book on Prayer]
Hadrat Ibn ‘Umar Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah has said,

إذا نعس أحدكم يوم الجمعة فليتحول من مجلسه ذلك
“When any of you dozes (in the Masjid) during the Friday prayer, he should change his place (if possible).” [Sunan Tirmidhi, Vol. 1, Page 115, Chapters on the Friday Prayer]
Hadrat Anas Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu reported that

إذا اشتد البرد بكر بالصلاة ، وإذا اشتد الحر أبرد بالصلاة ، يعنى الجمعة
When it was very cold, the Holy Prophet used to observe the prayer early; and when it was very hot, he used to delay the prayer till it was cooler. This refers to the Friday prayer. [Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 1, Page 124, Book on the Friday Prayer]

History of The Jummah Masjid

The Jummah Mosque
The extension work on the Mosquée-des-Arabes began in 1878. The plan called for the blending of the original structure into the larger one to accommodate the growing Muslim congregation. The work called for particular skills and dexterity, notably in the moulding and plastering of the sculptural work with ornamentation -- skills that could not be handled by local workers. Specialised workers were brought from India for the job as were the necessary building materials, namely: stones, lime and wood. Transportation posed no problem as several members of the Managing Body of the Mosque, headed by Haji Joonus Allarakia, were also owners of ships that plied regularly between India and Mauritius.

The crew of the Indian artisans, who did the extension works, was overseered by Ishaq Mistry, also from India. For the whole duration of the works, the workers stayed on the compounds of the Mosque "sleeping and eating under the pillared arches of the outer court." The project took twenty years to be completed. The long delay was due either to outbreaks of disease among the workers or to shortage of materials. However, in 1895, the expansion of the Mosque was completed. Al-Hajj Jackaria Jan Mahomed, a prominent member of the Muslim community in Port Louis and of the Managing Board of the Mosque, supervised the entire expansion project which saw the small Mosquee des Arabes expand from a small fringe on Queen Street to occupy the entire block except for a small section on Royal Street, which was leased to businesses for revenue purposes. The beautiful, small Mosquée-des-Arabes became the Jummah Mosque of Mauritius. It is a magnificent work of architecture conspicuous for its bulging domes, well trimmed arches and white minarets. The skill and dexterity shown by the workers in blending intricately the old structure with the new, speak eloquently of "their out standing ability and patience and personal devotion" to what became, to all involved in the project, a labour of love.

Merits of reaching early for Jumah

A’Hadiths
Guidance from The Prophet (peace be upon him)

Hadrat Abu Hurairah (r.a.) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "He who takes a bath on the day of Jumuah like the bath for ceremonial purity, and then goes (early to the masjid), he is like one who offers a camel as a sacrifice to seek the Pleasure of Allah; and he who comes at the second hour is like one who offers a cow to win the Pleasure of Allah; and he who comes at the third hour is like one who offers a ram with horns (in sacrifice); and he who comes at the fourth hour is like one who offers a hen; and he who comes at the fifth hour is like one who offers an egg. And when the Imam ascends the pulpit, the angels (who write the names of those who come to the mosque before the coming of the Imam) close (their record) in order to listen to the Khutbah.

JUMAH (FRIDAY PRAYER)

IMPORTANCE OF ATTENDING FRIDAY PRAYER

Friday Prayer is very important in Islam. It has got its own moral, social and political benefits. It is obligatory for every Muslim except women, children, seriously ill people and travelers. They can pray Jumah but it is not obligatory on them.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) has given a strong warning to a person who leaves his Jumah prayer without a good reason. In one hadith Abdullah bin Masud (ra) narrates what the Messenger of Allah (saw) once said about the people who did not come to the Friday Prayer without a good reason.

"I wish to appoint someone to lead the prayer and myself go to the houses of those who missed the Friday Prayer and set fire to their houses with the occupants in them." (Muslim, Ahmad).

Another hadith states, "A person who leaves 3 Friday prayers consecutively, Allah puts a seal on his heart." (Ahmad, Tirmizi, abu Dawud).

IMPORTANCE OF CLEANLINESS FOR FRIDAY PRAYER

Because in Friday Prayer a comparatively large number of Muslims gather in a big place, so , lslam emphasizes on the physical cleanliness as well. Prophet (saw) said, "A person who has a bath on Friday, cleanses himself fully, uses oil and perfume; then goes to the mosque early in the afternoon and takes his place quietly without pushing or disturbing people; then he prays (optional prayer as much as he was able to pray); then sits quietly listening to the Khutbah, he will be forgiven his sins between this Jumah and the next Jumah." (Bukhari).

IMPORTANCE OF GOING EARLY TO FRIDAY PRAYER

On Friday it is more rewarding to get ready quickly to go to the Mosque.

Abu Hurairah (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "On Friday the Angels stand oust the door of the mosque and write down the names of the people in the order in which they enter the mosque for Friday prayer. The first group of people who enter the mosque get the reward equivalent to that of sacrificing a camel, the people who enter the mosque after them get the reward equivalent to that of sacrificing a cow. The people who enter the mosque after them get the reward equivalent to that of sacrificing a ram and the people who follow on likewise get this reward of a Chicken, egg and so on there is a gradation of rewards for the people as they enter. The angels keep writing the names of the people as they enter the mosque until the Imam sits down to give Khutbah. Then the angels collect their registers and sit and listen to the Khutbah." (Bukhari, Muslim).

PRAYER BEFORE JUMAH

A person who goes to attend Friday prayer can pray as many nafls as he wishes after the sun has declined from its zenith to when the Imam comes to give Khutbah. Anyhow he is expected to pray at least 2 rakats sunnat.

LISTENING TO KHUTBAH (SERMON)

Once the Khutbah starts, the whole congregation should listen to it in silence. If a person arrives while the Imam is giving Khutbah then this person should pray 2 rakats nafl before sitting down to listen to Khutbah.

Jabir (ra) said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said while he was giving Khutbah:

"If anyone of you goes to attend the Friday Prayer while the Imam is delivering Khutbah he should pray 2 rakats and should not make them long." (Muslim)

There is another hadith. Jabir (ra) says that once a man, came to Friday Prayer while the Messenger of Allah (saw) was delivering Khutbah, so Allah's messenger (saw) asked him, "Did you pray?" "No", he answered. Then Prophet (saw) said to him, "Stand up and pray ." (Bukhari, Muslim)

It is a continuous practice in some mosques that those who arrive while the Imam is giving speech sit down and listen to the speech. When the Imam has finished the speech he gives time to the late arrivals to pray 2 or 4 rakats sunnat. After that the Imam gives a short Khutbah in Arabic before praying the Judah Prayer.

Some people get very annoysed if they see a person offer 2 rakats sunnat, while the imam is giving speech. They feel that the person is being disrespectful to the Imam. This is incorrect and unproved from the practice of Prophet Muhammad (saw). It is also against those hadiths which we mentioned above and the one we are mentioning below.

Abl Qatadah (ra) says that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "Whenever one of you enters the mosque he should not sit down without offering 2 rakats." (Bukhari, Muslim)

These hadiths clarify the points which are erroneously practiced above.

The Imams and ulamas who have even a slight fear of Allah and respect for hadith and the sunnat of Prophet Muhammad (saw) should top this practice and should not become annoyed when others pray 2 rakats.

ACTUAL JUMAH PRAYER

Jumah Prayer is 2 rakats fard. It a person is late and finds only 1 rakat with the congregation he should complete the second rakat alone. If a person arrives late that he misses the Jumah prayer completely then he has to offer 4 rakat fard of Zuhr prayer. The Jumah prayer is replacement of Zuhr prayer but the Imam has to recite Q'irat aloud in Jumah Prayer.

PRAYER AFTER JUMAH

After the Jumah Prayer 2 rakats of sunnat prayer is an authentically proved practice of Prophet Muhammad (saw) but some companions used to pray 4 or 6 rakats sunnat after the Jumah Prayer.

Ibn Umar (ra) says that the Messenger of Allah (saw) did not pray after the Friday prayer until he went home and then he prayed 2 rakats. (Bukhari, Muslim).

Abu Hurairah (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Anyone of you who is going to pray after the Friday prayer, he should pray 4 rakats." (Muslim)

Ata says: 'Whenever Abdullah ibn Umar (ra) prayed Jumah in Makkah, he would move a little forward after the Jumah prayer and offer 2 rakats; then he would move a little forward again and offer 4 rakats. And whenever he prayed Jumah in Madinah he did not pray in the Mosque after the Jumah prayer until he went back home; then he prayed 2 rakats. When he was asked why he did not pray in the mosque after the Jumah prayer, He answered, "This was the practice of Prophet Muhammad (saw) "

These hadiths Clarify that 2, 4 or 6 rakats (an be offered after the Jumah prayer according to the time and capacity of the person. It is not good practice to accuse people who read 2 rakats only because this, too, was the authentic practice of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

Amazing hadith about jumah

It is narrated in an authentic hadith that the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

“Whoever gets up on jumah prayer, washes himself (does ghusl), and then he leaves his house and walks and doesn’t ride, and he gets to the masjid early and sits close to the imam and doesn’t get distracted from the khutbah, he will get a reward for every step one year’s reward of fasting in the day and praying in the night.” [Tirmidhi]

Just stop and think about the amount of reward you could receive if you did this for every single Friday. Even if you live several miles away from the masjid, take one day off from work and do it once in your life.

Preparing for the Day of Judgement JUMMAH

Preparing for the Day of Judgement: a brilliant slender volume, brimming with wisdom, has so generously been added to my library. A huge JazakumuLlahu khairan to the giver.

Penned by ‘Abul Fadl Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn Ali al-Kannani al-Asqalani, better known by the name of Imam Ibn Hajar, who was born in Cairo in 773/1372.

‘This book is a compilation of some of the wise sayings of the Prophet (pbuh), the companions, and of the pious predecessors and ascetics.

Reflecting on these wise sayings and heeding these counsels will assist in infusing us with the requisite awareness and fervour to prepare for the Day of Judgement.

We are all in need of such counsel, for our Day of Judgement begins not when the world ends, but when our life comes to an end - which is indeed imminent - as the Prophet (pbuh) stated.’

The nine chapters are divided into ‘counsels’ according to the number of advises included in each counsel: from Counsel in Twos to Counsel in Tens. The link above shares a selection from Threes, while I will share some that have pierced my heart, from Counsel in Fives. Insha’Allah in the future I will post others that may ripple responses for us to be more serious with our preparation.

“The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “There will come a time for my ummah when they will love five things and forget five things. They will love this life (dunya) and forget the life to come; they will love property and forget the grave; they will love wealth and forget the [Day of] Judgement; they will love their children and forget the truth; and they will love themselves and forget Allah. They have nothing to do with me and I have nothing to do with them.”

The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “Allah does not give someone five things until He has prepared another five things for them. He does not give him gratitude except that He has prepared for him an increase [in provision and sustenance], He does not give him supplication (du’a) except that He has prepared its award; He does not give him the asking for forgiveness (istighfar) except that He has prepared for him forgiveness; He does not give him the asking for repentance except that He has prepared for him acceptance; and He does not give him charity except that He has prepared for him its reward.”

Abu Bakr as-Saddiq Radhiallahu anhu said, “Darkness is of five types and its lamps are five. Love of the dunya is a darkness and its lamp is God-consciousness; sins are a darkness and their lamp is repentance; the grave is a darkness and its lamp is: ‘There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’; the Hereafter is a darkness and its lamp is right actions; and the path is a darkness and its lamp is certitude.”

Umar Radhiallahu anhu said, “If it were not claiming to know the unseen, I would bear witness that these five types of people will surely be from the people of Paradise. The poor man who has to support a large family; the wife whose husband is please with her; the woman who gives her dowry to her husband, considering it an act of charity; the one whose parents are pleased with him; and the one who repents from sins.”

Ali Radhiallahu anhu said, “Were it not for five things all of mankind would have been righteous. Contentment with ignorance, covetousness over this world (dunya), miserliness over what is surplus, insincerity in actions, and conceit over one’s opinion.”

Yahya ibn Mu’ath al-Razi said, “He whose appetite increases, his corpulence will increase; he whose corpulence increases, his desires will increase; he whose desires increase his sins will increase; he whose sins increase, the hardness of his heart will increase; and he whose heart becomes hard will drown in the pitfalls of the dunya and its attractions.”

Sufyan al-Thawri said, “The poor have chosen five things and the rich have chosen five others. The poor have chosen sincerity of the soul, freedom from worries, worship of the Lord, ease of accountability, and the highest position. The rich have chosen weariness of the soul, preoccupation with worries, worship of the dunya, severity in accountability, and the lowest position.”

A sage said, “There are five obstacles to attaining God-consciousness (taqwa), and only the one who overcomes these five will attain it. Choosing hardship over ease, exertion over rest, lowliness over pride, silence over idle talk, and death over life.”

The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “In the gathering of wealth there are five [blameworthy] things, wearing oneself out in gathering it; neglecting the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah in preserving it; fear of robbers and thieves; being labeled a miser on account of it; and leaving the company of the righteous due to it. In distributing one’s wealth to the poor there are five [praiseworthy] things, ease of mind due to abandoning its amassing; having time to remember Allah rather than the worrying about preserving it; safety from robbers and thieves; gaining the title of ‘generous’; and accompanying the righteous due to leaving it behind.”

Sufyan al-Thawri said, “No one in this age amasses wealth except that he has five traits, the delusion that his lifespan will be long, overpowering greed, intense miserliness, lack of piety, and forgetfulness of the Hereafter.”

Muhammad ibn al-Duri said, “The damnation of Iblis was due to five things, he did not acknowledge his sin, he did not regret it, he did not blame himself, he did not resolve to repent, and he lost hope in the mercy of Allah. The salvation of Adam was due to five things, he acknowledged his sins, he regretted it, he blamed himself, he hastened to repent, and he did not lose hope in the mercy of Allah.”

Shaqiq al-Balkhi said, “Five precepts are obligatory upon you, so practice them: worship Allah to the extent that you need Him; take from the dunya to the extent of your stay in it; disobey Allah to the extent you can bear His punishment; prepare provisions during the dunya to the extent of your stay in the grave; and work for Paradise to the extent of your desired rank in it.”

Umar Radhiallahu anhu said, “I have seen all types of friends but I have never found a better friend than safeguarding the tongue; I have seen all types of clothes but I have never found clothes better than God-consciousness; I have seen all types of wealth but I have never found wealth better than contentment; I have seen all types of good deeds but I have never found a good deed better than giving good advice; I have seen all types of food and I never found food more delicious than patience.”

The Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam said, “There will come a time for my ummah when they will love five things and forget five others, they will love this dunya and forget the next world; they will love life and forget death; they will love palaces and forget the grave; they will love wealth and forget the [Day of] Account; and they will love creatures and forget the Creator.”

Yahya ibn Mu’ath al-Razi said in his entreaties and supplication, “O my Lord! The night is only pleasant to me when I supplicate to You; the day is only pleasant to me when I obey You; this world is only pleasant to me when I remember You; the Hereafter will only be pleasant to me if I receive Your pardon; and Paradise will only be pleasant to me if I see You.”
