Ramadhaan has a special relationship with the Quran, of course: "The month of Ramadhaan is the one in which the Quran was sent down, a guidance for mankind, clear proofs for the guidance, the Criterion; so whoever amongst you witnesses this month, let him fast it." [Quran 2:185) | |
The word 'so' in this ayah leads to the following paraphrase of one aspect of its meaning: "Fast this month because it is the one in which the Quran was sent down". Ibn 'Abbaas narrates "that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, was the most generous person, and he would be at his most generous in Ramadhaan because Jibreel (Gabriel) would come to him every night and he would rehearse the Quran with him."[Al-Bukhaari] This hadeeth contains recommendation of the following:
Further, Faatimah, may Allaah be pleased with her, narrated from her father Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, who told her that Jibreel would rehearse the Quran with him (in Ramadhaan) once every year, and he did so twice in the year of his death. [Al-Bukhaari]
About the situation of the Salaf (our righteous predecessors) during Ramadhaan, Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali said: "... Some of the Salaf would complete reciting the whole Quran during the night prayer of Ramadhaan every 3 days; others every 7 days, e.g. Qataadah, others in 10 days, e.g. Abu Rajaa' al-Atardi. The Salaf would recite Quran in Ramadhaan in Prayer as well as outside it. Al-Aswad would finish the Quran every 2 nights in Ramadhaan; Ibraaheem an-Nakh'i would do likewise in the last 10 nights specifically and every 3 nights during the rest of the month.
Qataadah would regularly finish the Quran in 7 days, but in 3 days during Ramadhaan, when he would study the Quran especially, and every night during its last 10 days. Al-Zuhri would say when Ramadhaan began, 'It is recitation of the Quran and feeding of people.' When Ramadhaan began, Imam Maalik would cease narrating Hadeeth and sitting with the people of knowledge, and stick to reciting the Quran from its pages, while Sufyaan al-Thawri would leave other acts of worship and stick to reciting the Quran. 'Aishah would recite from the pages of the Quran at the beginning of the day in Ramadhaan (i.e. after Dawn), until when the sun had risen, then she would sleep. Zayd al-Yaami would bring copies of the Quran when Ramadhaan began and gather his companions around him. ..." |

Merit of the tarawih salah
Once the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, addressed his followers on the last day of Shaban, on the eve of Ramadan, and said:
"There is a night in this month which is greater in excellence than a thousand months; Allah has enjoined an extra salah to be offered in the nights of this month. If a person performs a nafl act, out of his own free choice during this month, he will be entitled to receive the reward of a fard act performed in other months…" (Mishkat)
In an other tradition, Prophet Muhammad, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, has regarded the tarawih salah as a means of the forgiveness of sins. He has said:
"The one who observes the tarawih salah at night during Ramadan with complete faith and devotion only for the sake of the recompense of the hearafter, will have all of his previous sins forgiven by Allah." (Bukhari, Muslim)
Scholars have regarded the collective offerings of the tarawih salah as a compulsory sunnah having the kifiyah status. According to consensus of the Companions, the tarawih salah consists of twenty rak'ahs which are to be offered two at a time with one salutation and after every four rak'ahs a short pause of rest has to be observed for the convenience of the people. The worshipper has the option to sit quiet during the pause after each four rak'ahs, or recite the tasbeeh, or offer a voluntary salah.
The witr salah is allowed to be offered collectively only during Ramadan.
It is sunnah of the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, to complete recital of the whole Quran, from the beginning to the end. One must understand that the tarawih salah is a compulsory sunnah of the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, and has to be observed regularly until the end of the month of Ramadan, no matter whether the Quran has been recited once or more than once in the mosque.
Miscellaneous Regulations
The intention is to observe two rak'ahs of the tarawih salah, and thus to complete 20 rak'ahs with 10 salutations.
It is preferable to offer the witr salah after completion of the tarawih salah, but if the witr salah is offered before the tarawih salah, or after offering some of the rak'ahs of the tarawih salah, there is no harm.
If a late comer for the tarawih salah finds that the Imam has stood up for witr salah when he has yet to complete some of his tarawih rak'ahs he should join in witr congregation, and should complete his remaining rak'ahs of tarawih later in his own time.
It is desirable to observe the pause of rest after each four rak'ahs for as long as the time taken for observing the four rak'ahs; however, if the followers find it hard and inconvenient they may observe a shorter pause.
It is not valid to join in the tarawih congregation before first observing the fard salah of 'Isha, for the tarawih salah has to start after the 'Isha salah.
If a person has observed his fard salah in 'Isha in congregation, but has not observed the tarawih salah in congregation, he is permitted to offer his witr salah in congregation.
THE QURAN ON FASTING

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed
for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious).
(Fasting)
for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey,
the same number (should be made up) from other days. And as for those
who can fast with difficulty, (i.e. an old man, etc.), they have (a
choice either to fast or) to feed a poor person (for every day). But
whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you
fast, it is better for you if only you know.” (2:183-84)
“The month
of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and
clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and
wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of)
the month (of Ramadan), he must fast that month, and whoever is ill or
on a journey, the same number (of days which one did not fast must be
made up) from other days.
Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things
difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of
days), and that you must magnify Allah for having guided you so that
you may be grateful to Him” (2: 185).
“It is made
lawful for you to have sexual relations with your wives on the night of
the fasts. They are garments for you and you are the same for them.
Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He turned to you and
forgave you. So now have sexual relations with them and seek that which
Allah has ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread
(light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness
of night), then complete your fast till the nightfall.
And do not have sexual relations with them (your wives) while you are
in Itikaf in the mosques. These are the limits (set) by Allah, so
approach them not. Thus does Allah make clear His signs to mankind that
they may become Al Muttaqun (the pious)” (2:187).
“Verily! We have sent it (this Quran) down in the night of Al-Qadr.
And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr is?
The night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months
Therein descend the angels and the Ruh (Gabriel) by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees,
Peace! until the appearance of dawn (97:1-5)

Why forgive others during the Islamic month of Ramadan?
Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) said: Musa (as), the son of Imran once asked, "Oh my Lord! Who is the most honourable of Your servants? And He replied, the person who forgives even when he is in a position of power." (Baihaqi)
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) said: "Whoever wishes that Allah (SWT) may favor him with His blessings and accommodate him in Paradise should refine his morals, behave justly with the people, take pity on orphans, help weak and the helpless and be humble before Allah who has created him."
You know what I'm referring to - those times when you get into an argument(s) with a family member, friend, boss, employee, coworker, classmate, teacher or whoever. You know your facts are right or that you've been wronged with an insulting remark, sarcastic comment or rudeness.
And so, you choose to hold a grudge. After all, you've got a right to. Nobody should be treated this way. Why should you forgive? You're not the one who started this. You're not the one who doesn't have the facts straight.
True. You may be right. You may be in that position of power mentioned in the Hadith above. But forgiving others, apart from positively affecting our health (less stress) and our minds (one less negative thing to focus on), is a necessary step to closeness to Allah (SWT).
How can we move up the ladder of spiritual development when we hold bitterness and anger towards another person? While we may have been in the right, is it worth sacrificing our energy on a grudge instead of on growth?
Is there not something strange about asking for God's forgiveness of our sins while withholding our forgiveness from someone who has hurt us?
We cannot expect for Allah's forgiveness unless we also forgive those who do wrong to us. Forgiving each other, even forgiving one's enemies is one of the most important Islamic teachings. Allah (SWT) says in Holy Quran: And those who shun the great sins and indecencies, and whenever they are angry they forgive. (al-Shura 42:37)
One of the distinguishing features of Ramadan is forgiveness. Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) explained in one Hadith that Ramadan is a month whose beginning is Mercy, whose middle is Forgiveness and whose end is freedom from the Hellfire. This makes it a great time to ask Allah (SWT) for His Forgiveness. It's also a wonderful time to open our hearts and cleanse them of grudges and bitterness by forgiving others.
Let us use these remaining days of forgiveness this Ramadan to open our hearts to those who have wronged us and forgive them as we beg Allah (SWT) to forgive us.
Please forgive me; if I have wronged you, I am no angel!
"The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong". Mahatma Gandhi
